Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Whisk
  • Ring mold or small cup

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh salmon fillet, skinless and boneless
  • 1 ripe avocado, diced
  • 1/2 cucumber, deseeded and finely diced
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon capers, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional garnish: microgreens or fresh herbs

Instructions

  • Begin by carefully checking the salmon for any bones and removing them if found. With a sharp knife, finely dice the salmon into small cubes and place them in a mixing bowl.
  • Add the finely chopped red onion, capers, and fresh dill to the salmon. Gently mix to combine.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the extra virgin olive oil and fresh lemon juice to create a light dressing. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Pour the dressing over the salmon mixture and gently fold to ensure the salmon is well coated. Let the mixture marinate for about 5 minutes in the fridge.
  • Meanwhile, dice the avocado and cucumber into small cubes, ensuring they are of similar size to the salmon for a consistent texture.
  • Gently fold the avocado and cucumber into the salmon mixture, being careful not to mash the avocado.
  • To serve, use a ring mold or a small cup to plate the tartare. Pack the mixture firmly into the mold on the serving plate, then carefully lift off the mold to maintain the shape.
  • Garnish with microgreens or a sprig of fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

Ensure your salmon is very fresh, as it will be eaten raw. If you prefer, you can briefly freeze the salmon before preparing to ensure it is extra fresh and to make it easier to dice. Adjust the seasoning of the dressing according to your taste, and consider adding a small amount of grated garlic or ginger for an extra zing. The salmon tartare is best served immediately after preparation.
